Anniversary of Henry Ford’s Retirement – September, 1945

Seventy years ago, this month, Henry Ford retired from his position as head of the Ford Motor Company. I’m sure he was tired after so many years of innovation and struggle as he built his personal empire.

It seems to me that Ford automobiles are either loved or hated by consumers. I’ve owned a few with good results, so I have nothing bad to say about them. But then, I don’t get very excited about cars. I’m one of those who look at cars as a necessary evil. I have to own one, but it can be more functional than luxurious.

Today a friend and I will drive a couple of hours to visit a car auction. It’s not just a car auction, but limited to classic and collector automobiles. You know, cars like a 1928 Duesenberg, or a 1932 Ford truck in mint condition. Or maybe a 1972 Ford Mustang or some other muscle car from that era.

I used to think owning an old car would be fun until I watched a driver park one on the auction floor. He was wearing leather gloves, and without power steering he worked hard turning the steering wheel, gripping with all his strength, pulling and pulling to move those large wheels attached to that iron frame supporting a heavy 12 cylinder engine.

While walking to his table at a restaurant in New York City, Glen Curtiss was once stopped by an old man who said, “If you need any help with your lawsuit, please let me know.”

Curtiss was with his attorney, and later asked, “Who was that guy?”

The attorney replied, “Oh, that’s Henry Ford.”

This was when Curtiss was being sued by the Wright brothers over the invention of airplane flaps vs. using wires to warp the wings to control flight.

In his early years Henry Ford was sued by a physician in Rochester, New York over the design of the engine. The doctor had a patent on valves or something and sued Ford for violating it, and after a legal battle between the two sides Ford won, and continued with his production. He, thereafter, was sensitive to the issue of progress in spite of prior claims.

The Ford Motor Company did introduce many new features and had some flops. Most would agree that the Mustang was among its best, and the Edsel the worst.

The late 20th century was the most challenging as Japanese engineering, led by an American engineer, set a new standard that had to be met, and today the American automobile industry improves each year as more and more innovation is introduced into the process of design and manufacturing.

Old Henry would be proud of today’s autos. He’d probably not waste time with the recent history, but eagerly look to the future and ways to further advance the technology of modern automobiles.

So we salute Henry Ford for his contribution to such an important part of our culture.

Electrical Wheelchair Lift for the Automobile

When someone is relegated to a wheelchair, special care must be taken especially when the person needs to ride in a vehicle. This is because the individual cannot get in or out that easily.

The only thing that one can do is to try to lift the disabled person from the wheelchair to the car. This however can take a long time and can really be quite taxing to the muscles. Great thing there are machines that can make the whole process easier – such as electrical wheelchair lifts.

There are actually two types of wheelchair lifts. The first one is powered by hydraulics while the other is powered by electricity. Most people prefer the electric type because this can be wired to the battery of the vehicle. Doing this can save you a few dollars. The hydraulics type needs some fluid, which has to be placed periodically to keep it functioning.

These different kinds of lifts can be found in nearby stores. There you will find other models such as the extended lift, which is probably the most convenient to use. The individual only needs to push a button and voila, you can already lift the wheelchair inside the car. The same process is done when exiting the vehicle.

There are also variations in the type of exits used in the electric lift. Some electric lifts allow people to be entered and exited from the lift from the same direction while others have different entrances, usually at the center, and exits, which is often placed on the sides. The exits and entrances that will be used will of course depend on the kind of wheelchair that the person has.

The cost of an electric or hydraulic wheelchair lift can be very expensive. The cheapest one is a little over $ 10,000. What is more, buying these gadgets will not be covered by Medicare or by an insurance firm. One can however get a discount directly from the manufacturer of the van. Just ask your local car dealer.

Remember though that buying electric wheelchair lifts is not as easy as buying the model that is available in the store. You actually have to make sure that the model will fit your vehicle. For this, it is advisable to bring in a technician to do the measurements. The customer can bring the measurements to the store and have the wheelchair lift installed if it fits. Be prepared to wait for your turn as installation may take a day or two especially if there are many customers who are also having their automobiles installed with it. As an added precaution and to lessen the possible inconvenience, check if the lifts work properly before you leave the shop.

Hybrid Vehicles Cause Less Environmental Pollution

Hybrid vehicles are the kind of automobiles that cause less or no environment pollution. In practicality, it is absolutely impossible to run an automobile without some kind of pollutant emission. At least, the technological developments so far cannot guarantee such a vehicle, but there are several methods to reduce the level of pollutant that is emitted.

Currently, the worst culprits of environmental pollution among vehicles are automobiles that run on fossil fuels such as petrol, diesel, and gas. That means more than 90% of these at present, are serious offenders of environmental protection. Among the environmental problems, air pollution and damaging effects of the Ozone Layer are the most serious. There have been concerted efforts from various sectors – such as automobile manufacturers, scientists, and governmental regulators – to reduce the green house gas emission from vehicles that run on fossil fuels.

The efforts have been producing good results. Newer models invariably have better emission controls. However, the overall level of green house gas emission has been increasing. The major reason for this is the exponential increase in the number of these cars in use. Over the last decade, the sale of automobiles has considerably increased – not just in the developed countries like the United States and Japan, but also in developing nations like China and India.

Therefore, just reducing the green house gas emission of cars that run on fossil fuels is not sufficient for reducing the level of environmental damage. This realization paved the way for the creation of several types of green vehicles. Examples of such environmentally friendly cars are electric, solar-powered, and those that use hydrogen fuel. Despite the obvious advantages to environmental protection, there are some negative aspects for them. The performance of hybrid cars at present does not compare well to that of cars powered by conventional fuels such as petrol, diesel, or gas. As a result, a kind of hybrid was born. This type of car can run on both conventional fuels and the non-conventional fuel types. Most of the major automobile companies in the world produce the hybrid type green vehicle.

The most commonly used non-conventional fuel is electricity. The market share of battery-powered cars has been expanding steadily. The level of green house gas emission is substantially lower for electric cars. However, in terms of performance, such as acceleration in high speed, these green vehicles pale in comparison with those that use fossil fuels. Therefore, the hybrids that run both on electricity and conventional fuels provide a compromise option between environmental considerations and the desire for better performance.

Solar energy is also used to run automobiles. The mechanism of these cars is similar to that of electric, however, in the case of solar cars, electricity is provided by solar cells. Another kind of green car is the type that uses hydrogen as fuel. More research and innovations are needed to make the performance of these cars to match with that of those using conventional fuels.

The Factors That Affect Your Pennsylvania Auto Insurance Rates

What factors affect the cost of your Pennsylvania auto insurance rates? It is important to understand these factors in order to find cheap Pennsylvania auto insurance rates because after all; who want to pay more for their PA car insurance policy than they have to?

The state of Pennsylvania like many others has their own requirements when it comes to automobile insurance. The state that has approximately 12 million people is home to many big cities such as Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Rates change accordingly to where people live and what they drive. It is important to understand that rates are not the same for everyone and that there are many different things that you can do to lower your rates. Below you will find out some valuable information about automobile insurance rates in Pennsylvania and some key information about how rates are calculated.

Pennsylvania Auto Insurance Rates Of The Past

Although there is not exact figure of the average rate of car insurance premium that the everyday Pennsylvania resident pays nowadays, there are statistics that show how much they had paid in the past. In the year 2003 the average Pennsylvania premium was about $ 909 compared to the national average of about $ 914. It is important to understand that the premiums have been on the rise since then simply because automobiles have been converted to a necessity instead of a luxury. It is also known that the first drop of automobile insurance rates came in 2007 when most premiums dropped from 0.5 to 1% and in 2008 and beyond experts predict that the rates will go up again!

Determinants Of Automobile Insurance Rates In Pennsylvania

The PA automobile insurance industry like many others has determinants on how their rates are calculated. It is important to understand these important factors because the more you know about what determines your rate, the more money you may be able to save.

1. Place of Residence: One of the most important determinants of your PA car insurance rates is your place of residence. If you live in a rural community you will not pay that much in car insurance simply because the likelihood of an accident is not that great. On the other hand if you live in a big city like the ones mentioned above, you will have to pay more per month. Add to the many traffic jams and the number of accidents and the risk of your vehicle being stolen and the premium will increase to a great degree.

2. Your Age and Gender: This is one of the most important determinants of the rates in Pennsylvania automobile insurance industry. The rates in the auto insurance business are high when you are a teenager and you are starting to drive, are lower when you are a middle aged American (usually from 26-50) and then they get high again when you become a senior citizen. A reason for this is that teens and senior citizens tend to have a higher accident risk than do middle middle people. Your gender will also be a determinant because although there is a common widespread idea that women drive worse than men, it is men who get in more accidents than women because they tend to drive more aggressively. Because of this men's rates are usually higher than those of women.

3. Vehicle Type and Year: This is very important because it is the most used determinant when it comes to insurance companies coming forth with a rate. Every year insurance companies get a top 100 countdown of the cars with the most injuries after an accident and the ones that are at the highest risk of being stolen. Those cars at the top of both categories will be the ones that will be expensive to insure because they are of more "risk" to the insurance company. Another important thing to highlight and that may be bad for those drivers that own sports cars is that insurance companies usually charge those drivers a lot more for car insurance. The reason for this is that in the automobile insurance business speed is associated with accidents and although some may argue that it is not fair to discriminate against sports car owners, the auto insurance industry does just that.

4. Credit Report: Many people don't understand why this has anything to do with the rate of your automobile insurance. The truth is that for any insurance in the market nowadays, credit report is very important. If you have a good credit report you will have to pay less money than someone who doesn't have good credit. This is simply because auto insurance companies are protecting themselves from those drivers that cannot pay regular monthly premiums.

It's a Doozie – The History of the Duisenberg Automobile Classic Motor Car

It can be said that many of the greatest things in life start off with humble beginnings. So is it with the Duisenberg Motor car. You may have heard the expression off times – "That's a Doozie" or "It's a Doozie". These are all references to a great car and car automaker of renown – the Duisenberg.

The Duisenberg began its life as the Auburn-Cord-Duisenberg. Ernest Lobban Cord began his career in the automobile industry in a most humble manner – as a simple repairer of model T Ford cars. It could be said that this start of the Duisenberg line met with even fairly mixed fortunes. – Mr. Cord said to have become a millionaire three separate times even before he reached the ripe and experienced age of 21 – losing his entire fortune fully each of the three times. Finally at the ripe old age of 30 years and with lasting and real wealth ,, Mr. Cord joined the failing Auburn company as its "general manager"., Bought a substantial share in the company and proceeded to bring Auburn back onto the path of financial security and wealth.

Aside from being obviously a clever engineer himself, Cord had the greatest ability and abilities to spot great talents and talents in others. As a result he spotted, hired and employed such classic notables and famous legends in the automobile trades as Gordon Buehrig, Harry Miller and Count Alexis de Sakhnoffsky. Next Mr. Cord promptly bought control of the Lycoming engine plant and the Duisenberg Company itself.

The Deisenberg brothers, Fred and August had originally begun by actually making bicycles in their adopted "home town" of Des Moines Iowa, before going into the sport of motor racing, building their first racing car in 1903. The Duisenberg Company itself was formed in 1912 to build race cars, and their success led inevitably to the manufacture of standard road cars. The first of the Duisenberg line of standard motor cars for the road and non-racing a driver was the Model A tourer. The Model A "Tourer" has been dated for the year 1920. It can be rightly said with truthfulness as well as knowledge that the Duisenberg road cars were more than heavily based on the knowledge and expertise gained from auto racing itself and were excellent examples of advanced engineering and automotive mechanical technologies of the time. The Duisenberg automotive product line quickly established a more than solid and well earned reputation on the roads just as the Duisenberg racing cars had collected a bevy of speed and racing records. Amazingly the Duisenberg racing group had taken the venerable race wins of Indianapolis in the years 1924, 1925 and 1927.

It can be said that Mr. Cord's tough leadership and empire-building ambitions had brought a most vital had brought a most effective combine into being and Auburn-Cord -Duisenberg proceeded to flourish in no uncertain terms. Unfortunately Cord's timing was particularly bad and all of his projects reached fruition in the same fateful year – 1929, the same year as the great stock market "crash". Miller, himself, patented his version of "Front Wheel Drive"

The following year – 1929 – in which for the first time the Cord nameplate itself was used – the L29 was introduced and released for sale. Designed by Carl van Ranst, it carried Miller's front axle setup. Next in line were such speedy and flighty cars as the Auburn Speedster which was had the distinction of being the first car line that stated and guaranteed that each car had been individually been speed tested to 100 miles per hour.

Hence the Duisenberg reputation as fine motor cars of great speed as well as beauty was born, cultured and maintained. It's no accident that the name Duisenberg carries such a reputation and notoriety among car aficionados.

The expression "It's a Doozie" has been well earned.

Automobile and Car Locksmith Services

Many people think of a car locksmith when they lock their keys in the car and cannot get in it. A car locksmith can provide many additional services if you have locked the keys inside of the car. These services include rekeying the doors, ignition, emergency vehicle and trunk opening, key extraction, and much more.

Some people drive high security vehicles today that have transponder chips in them. You can start your car by the press of a button. Losing a transponder like this could seem devastating and if you call the manufacturer of your vehicle, they will charge you an arm and a leg. A car locksmith can actually help you with installing an entirely new system if you lose your keyless entry system.

The most common reason people call a locksmith is to get inside a locked car with the keys inside of it. Many women will put their purse and keys in the front seat, children in the back seat, and the groceries in the trunk, and realize they have locked their children in the car. This is extremely common, except it can be very dangerous on a hot summer day and the windows are up. A locksmith can pop the lock of the car and get you inside of it. However, a car locksmith can also open a trunk if you have locked your keys in the trunk. If you have lost your keys, no matter the type, a locksmith can help by rekeying the ignition and the doors.

A car locksmith is available 24 hours a day to assist people locked out of their vehicles. In most cases, it is usually cheaper to pay a locksmith than to call your insurance company to assist you. Most people have a deductible with their insurance company much higher than what the locksmith is going to charge you. Not all locksmiths accept vehicle insurance but most do. Any type of emergency lock service you need for a vehicle, it is best to call a locksmith.

Many people get into cars themselves when they lock their keys in it. The problem is that doing this can cause damage to the paint, the interior of the door, and even cause problems with the window. A car locksmith has the appropriate equipment to open a door quickly and gain you access. There is no reason to spend hours causing damage to a lock when a locksmith can take care of it.

Always call a car locksmith if you have troubles with a lock in a vehicle. If you have locked your keys in the car, if you cannot get in a locked trunk, if you need to rekey the ignition, and if you have lost an auto starting mechanism for a keyless vehicle, call a locksmith.

Current Economic Condition of Auto Industry Affects Steel Market

Steel, the biodegradable super-metal, is incorporated into countless facets of human life. One of the most widespread uses for steel is the manufacturing of automobiles. The cars that we drive are made up of this lightweight, durable material. However, due to the current faltering condition of the auto industry, steel manufacturers are seeing a drop in sales due to decreased demand for consumer automobiles.

In the United States, the automotive industry accounts for a large portion of steel manufacturing business. In North America alone, automakers produced 16.5 million units in 2006. The projected output for 2009 is 10.5 million units, a 36 percent decline. For those of us living in the Midwest, this economic crisis hits close to home. Detroit and the surrounding area has always been a hub for automobile producers, home to Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Corp. Due to their close link with the auto industry, steel producers and manufacturers are also hard-hit. MCN, or Metal Center News, recently published a survey of 45 toll processing and steel manufacturing companies. The results indicated that a majority of the respondents (57 percent) sighted their business being down by an average of 22 percent in 2008. However, 16 percent claimed flat revenues and 27 percent recorded gains.  So, even though the general market trend is headed in a downward slope, there are still companies that site profit.

In this dismal economy, it is important to remember the positives. Chrysler, one of the United States’ top three auto producers, has recently declared bankruptcy.  However, on May 30, 2009, the auto giant entered into federal bankruptcy protection. With help from President Obama and government funds, Chrysler has partnered with Fiat and will continue to produce automobiles for the American market. Many of these auto companies are forced to merge, considering that current economic conditions will not allow them to stand on their own feet.  These collaborations can yield positive and negative returns for steel producers.  When one company partners with another, two clients then turn into one, which may result in decreased profits.  However, steel producers benefit because Chrysler did not go under. The company is still producing automobiles, which means that they will still need steel to make these cars, which is good news for steel producers.
